Board & Leadership Development

Your next difficult moment will be handled by the leaders you are developing now.

Practical Board and senior leadership development built around the capabilities that matter when responsibility, ambiguity and scrutiny increase, and around what senior leaders are navigating now and next: significant change, technology-informed decisions and sustained uncertainty.

The emphasis is not simply on leadership knowledge. It is on helping people apply what they learn to the real decisions, relationships and organisational priorities they are responsible for.

Leadership development with independent professional recognition behind it.

Ahqenza is an Institute Approved Provider.

Ahqenza's learning and development provision has been independently reviewed by The Institute of Leadership, providing external recognition of the professional standards underpinning our approach.

For L&D and People leaders, this provides additional assurance when selecting development for senior and future leaders.

Professional recognition for participants

Where an Ahqenza programme is delivered within the scope of the relevant Institute approval, participants may also benefit from professional recognition associated with The Institute of Leadership.

Depending on the approved programme and applicable Institute requirements, this can include:

  • Institute of Leadership certification on successful completion
  • Recognised CPD hours
  • 12 months' membership of The Institute of Leadership
  • Access to Institute leadership resources and professional development opportunities
  • Eligibility, where the Institute's membership criteria are met, to use relevant professional post-nominal letters

Grounded in executive practice, not theory alone.

Ahqenza's development work draws on an unusual combination of experience, which is why participants can connect what they learn to the decisions and pressures they actually face.

  • Senior finance, risk and transformation roles in major UK and international banks
  • Governance and regulatory oversight, including the ICAEW Audit Registration Committee
  • Fellow Chartered Accountant and Chartered Manager
  • Executive education and MBA teaching through Cranfield School of Management and University College London
  • Work alongside Boards, Committees and senior leadership teams on consequential decisions
  • Independent investigations experience that informs how culture, conduct and accountability are taught

Programmes are shaped by what senior responsibility actually demands, and by experience of making, examining and investigating the kinds of decisions participants are being prepared for.

Development programmes

  • Board Development

Development for Boards and Committees focused on governance, roles, constructive challenge, effectiveness, decision-making and boardroom dynamics, including the questions Boards now face on technology, controls and significant change.

  • Executive Leadership Development

Bespoke development for individual executives and whole senior leadership teams, designed around the leadership challenges, organisational context and capabilities that matter most to the client.

  • Senior Leadership Programmes

Structured development for leaders moving into broader organisational responsibility, helping them strengthen judgement, influence, strategic perspective and their ability to lead effectively through greater complexity and scrutiny.

  • Future Executive & Succession Programmes

Development for high-potential and succession-pipeline leaders preparing for executive responsibility, with particular emphasis on the transition from functional expertise to enterprise leadership, and the confidence to lead before the title, or the certainty, arrives.

  • Leading Organisational Change & Transformation

Development for executives and senior teams leading restructuring, integration, regulatory remediation, technology-enabled change or other significant transformation. The focus is the leadership side of change rather than a change methodology: making consequential decisions before every uncertainty is resolved, keeping trust and constructive challenge alive when people are anxious about what change means for them, handling difficult conversations well, and giving Boards and sponsors an honest view of progress.

Themes that run through our programmes

  • Judgement Under Pressure

Making sound decisions when information is incomplete, the consequences are significant and certainty will not arrive in time.

  • Leading Through Significant Change

Leading people through restructuring, transformation and sustained uncertainty while keeping trust, challenge and performance intact.

  • Human Judgement in an AI-Enabled Organisation

Deciding where human judgement must remain, who is accountable for technology-informed decisions and what senior leaders need to ask.

  • Influence Without Authority

Building credibility and influencing decisions where hierarchy alone is insufficient.

  • Creating Conditions for Challenge

Helping leaders create environments in which assumptions can be tested and difficult issues raised.

  • Culture, Conduct & Consequence

Understanding how leadership behaviour and organisational responses shape what people believe is genuinely expected.

Not an off-the-shelf leadership curriculum.

Ahqenza works with clients to shape development around the responsibilities participants hold, the challenges they are likely to face and the organisational context in which they need to lead.

Programmes are grounded in real executive experience. Participants work on the decisions, relationships, challenges and priorities they are actually responsible for, so that what they learn is tested against real situations while the programme is still running.

From learning to organisational outcomes

  • Development objectives linked to the organisation's priorities and agreed at the outset
  • Live issues brought by participants and worked on during the programme
  • Time to apply learning between sessions, then reflect on what changed
  • A shared view, agreed in advance, of what better practice should look like afterwards

How a programme comes together

  1. The context

We start with the organisation's priorities, the responsibilities participants hold and what needs to be different as a result of the programme.

  2. The design

Objectives, audience, format and how progress will be recognised are agreed at the outset, for delivery in person, virtually or through a blended approach.

  3. The programme

Facilitated learning built around live issues, combined with practical application, reflection and development between sessions.

  4. The practice

Participants apply what they learn to real decisions and relationships. The aim is to practise leadership more effectively where it matters, not simply to know more about it.

Finance Leadership Development

Specialist development for CFOs, Finance Directors and senior finance leaders, and for the executives and Board members who rely on financial judgement to make significant decisions.

This is where Ahqenza's roots run deepest. The work draws on practitioner experience across audit, finance, risk and regulatory change in major banks, including enterprise finance and risk transformation on programmes exceeding £100 million, alongside finance and transformation teaching at executive and MBA level.

Programmes focus on the questions finance leaders are facing now: allocating capital with confidence, evidencing the value of transformation and technology investment, giving a Board genuine assurance over controls, and influencing decisions well beyond the finance function.

  • Finance for Non-Finance Leaders

Helping executives and non-executives interrogate financial information, understand what drives value and risk, and bring confident financial judgement to strategic decisions.

  • Investment, Value & Capital Decisions

Assessing business cases and major investment decisions: what value is being claimed, how it will be evidenced, and when the right response is challenge rather than approval.

  • Risk, Control & Assurance Leadership

For leaders responsible for internal control, assurance and reporting integrity, including the leadership questions raised by the Board's declaration on material controls under the UK Corporate Governance Code.

  • Finance Transformation, Data & AI

Preparing finance leaders to lead complex transformation across people, process, data and technology, including automation, AI-enabled change and the evolving role of the finance function.

  • Finance at the Board Table

Presenting performance and risk with clarity, handling Board and investor scrutiny, and making the financial case in a way decision-makers can act on.

  • Negotiation & Influence for Finance Leaders

Practical development in stakeholder management, strategic communication and negotiation with executives, delivery partners and vendors.
